Luka Modric: Would he be a good signing?

After having an initial bid of £22million rejected, many Chelsea fans have been wondering whether or not signing Croatian playmaker Luka Modric would be a good thing. Following our disappointing season, the re-building process now begins and many big money signings are to be expected over the next couple of months.

If you ask any Tottenham fan, or even any football fan (except Arsenal fans for obvious reasons), you will get high praises and many positive reviews. Having been voted Tottenham fan’s player of the year, it shows that Modric must have done something right to earn this award.

Modric was seen as a vital player in Tottenham’s impressive league and European run. Sitting in the middle of the park, Modric is also able to play behind the main striker or a deep-lying playmaking role. The Croatian is seen as the balance between the midfield and the forwards and is like a puppeteer pulling all the strings. Modric was recognized as the second best passer in the league by Opta, with a pass completion rate of 86% only second to our Michael Essien (87%).

However, some Chelsea fans feel that buying Modric would be a mistake. With Chelsea poised to increase their offer, they feel that any bid in excess of £25million for a player with a limited number of goals in him, may be too much money and a high risk. Some also feel that Modric may not suit our formation or style of play, especially as we are looking to build around Torres.

Although he is 5ft 7in in height and may carry a large price tag, Chelsea fans should be encouraged should we sign Modric. His vision and superb ball distribution makes him an ideal signing for us.

He can thread the ball through to the forwards and help control the balance between the midfield and the attackers. Last season we craved balance in our midfield and should we sign Modric, we can play him along with Michael Essien and Frank Lampard to bring about this balance.

The Croatian is seen as the ideal replacement to fill in that creativity midfield role that we had missed at times last season.

midfield role that we had missed at times last season. But to bring in a player of that calibre would cost a lot of money.

In my own opinion, I feel that Chelsea will benefit hugely should we sign Luka Modric as he may potentially hold the key to unlock Torres and help us win back the Premier League title once again.

Chelsea FC and the New Premier League Squad Rules

This year is unique as the club will need to adapt to new Premier League rules that effectively limit the squad to 25 players, eight of whom have to meet the ‘home grown’ criteria.

Ramires Deal Sealed

Former Club: Benfica

Nationality: Brazilian

Age: 23

Ramires has been confirmed as a Chelsea player after signing a 4 year deal with the club after completing a medical according Chelsea TV

The young Brazilian midfielder impressed in Benfica’s title winning side in Portugal last season. Having moved to Lisbon from Cruzeiro last summer, the ‘Blue Kenyan’ (as he was nicknamed in his homeland) has become hot property on the European transfer market.

Chelsea’s midfield has lost Michael Ballack this summer and with Michael Essien picking up more and more injuries; it might be time to invest in a midfield which has carried itself without major investment for practically five seasons.

Moreover, Frank Lampard is now the wrong side of 30, meaning that he will surely begin to miss more games as the strain of Premier League, Champions League and International fixtures keep racking up on his body. Not to mention the fact that Joe Cole has swapped Chelsea blue for Liverpool red.

Ramires has a knack of scoring goals with runs from deep, as well as an eye for a killer pass. The fact that he is just 23 means that the future of the midfield at Stamford Bridge could be secured for several years, as he will join the relatively youthful pairing of John Obi Mikel and Essien as well as the highly rated youngster Nemanja Matic.

The Superstars Chelsea Should Not Buy

It is not often that I get drawn into writing about transfer speculation, I normally leave that to others that you will see writing here in the coming days and weeks during the build up to the start of the season.

On this occasion I feel compelled to write about the players that Chelsea should resist the urge of chasing in the coming weeks.

In defence and attack Chelsea have strength and depth and potential match winners, it is for this reason that I see no real need for the procurement of any ‘Marquee’ signings at the club in the coming weeks.

Amongst the big names that have been suggested the three below would constitute a step backwards as the club strives for financial stability.

Fernando Torres

Although a proven Premier League talent, Fernando Torres with a hefty price tag and legs seemingly made of matchsticks would not be a shrewd investment for Chelsea Football Club.

Whilst it is likely that an injury free Torres, would be a real weapon for any side, I do not believe on the current evidence that this is something that will occur in the next 18 months.

Therefore even if a deal was infact possible, the club should focus on developing the talent that it has at its disposal or invest in younger talent that will cost less and draw a lower salary.

Kaka

A ridiculously talented footballer that Chelsea simply do not need, the transfer fee and salary make the signing of the former Carlo Ancelotti charge unsustainable.

I also feel that he would struggle in the Premier League, but fortunately this pipe dream will never come to pass.

Robinho

Its ok the last one is a joke, I just want to remind people that not all big name players live up to their reputation, at the time many were devastated by the transfer chaos that took place two summers ago but I think Chelsea were the winners in that transfer saga.

With a club the size of Chelsea there is the temptation to try and sign every star of the modern game in the Real Madrid ‘Galaticos’ style, however as the mixed fortunes of Real Madrid show, success is built on squads and not neccessarily stars.

There have been departures, some may argue that the loss of Michael Ballack and Joe Cole will leave a whole in the club. However the return of ‘new’ signing Michael Essien means that these losses will not be as hard as many will fear.

There is no doubt that a few players will need to come in to replace the players that have left, but in my opinion we need squad players, or young players that can be developed, rather than overpaid and overhyped ‘superstars’.

A Midfield Left in Pieces

Will Jack Cork be featuring for the first team this season?

Many were surprised when it was announced that midfielders Joe Cole and Michael Ballack were to leave the club along with Brazilian utility man Juliano Belletti. With the news that Portugese midfielder Deco and Miroslav Stoch are also moving to pastures new faces are guaranteed  this summer.

The question is where Carlo Ancelotti will bring these new faces from,  having done a historic double in his first year at the club now he is almost certainly aiming to go one step further and capture the ever illusive Champions League crown.

It is believed that Carlo Ancelotti has a warchest of transfer funds behind him and the full backing of the board and the owner to dive into the market and bring in new fresh faces. But is splashing the cash what the Italian manager wants to do? After the recent arrival of Yossi Benayoun one space in the midfield seemed as if it was being filled. Yet, we remain with several other midfield positions on the field and the bench yet to be occupied.

With the new Premier League rules to come into play next year it is a good assumption that there will be more heavy involvement from the youth at the club. Talented midfielder Josh McEachran is training with the first team squad after an impressive season with the Chelsea Reserve and Youth teams. Jack Cork after an impressive second half of the season with Burnley also seems like another candidate to push for a break in the first team.

Carlo Ancelotti recently quoted that “We have some talented young players here that work every day with the first team in training and they are very close to stepping up to the squad on matchdays.

“This is our aim – to put more players from the Academy up into the first team in the future, so this success was very important for us”

It all boils down to the choice between Club Youth and splashing the cash for stars from other clubs. The choice to many of us seems obvious but for the manager of Chelsea Football Club it could really decide how much longer he will remain at the club.
