Why we should move from Stamford Bridge

Chelsea Football Stadium

Look around the top clubs in Europe : Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Manchester United and so on all have one thing in common : the capacity of their grounds . Even St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United, has a capacity of over 50,000. Then look at Stamford Bridge, with it’s 42,000 capacity, and you realize that it just isn’t enough .

The time has come for our team, Chelsea Football Club, to leave the albeit wonderful surroundings of the Bridge. Yes, it may have a brilliant history. Yes, it may have amazing facilities. Yes, it may be our home, but sometimes, we just have to move on . As the FFP ( FIFA Fair Play ) is rapidly approaching, clubs need to find new ways of making money.

Stadium revenue will become so important in the future, and we need to realize that a 60,000 all-seater is what is needed . At this present moment in time, we can’t make the money that will soon be needed.

Another advantage that would come from a Stadium change is the ever-growing ticket prices. Fans vented their frustration with a boycott of the last Champions League game against RC Genk and rightly so : the ordinary fan is being thought about less and less all the time . A move away, however, would possibly change all that.

The prices are so high right now due to the fact that we are trying to make as much as possible from 42,000 fans, yet if we moved to somewhere on the scale of the Emirates, there wouldn’t be the need to charge so much . Prices would stay more consistent and accessible to the everyday fan, not just to prawn sandwich brigade.

The truth is, this proposed change of home will not come around in the near future. It may not happen for another few decades. But if we went to cement our reputation as a top club , a bigger stadium is vital . Could you imagine Real Madrid playing in front of 40,000 ? No , me neither .
