Ryan Bertrand Marks His Premier League Debut With An Assist

Ryan Bertrand made his Premier League debut tonight to mark his continued development as an understudy if not long term successor to Ashley Cole.

It is not easy to be a young left back at Chelsea Football Club, with Ashley Cole the undisputed best left back in the world first team opportunities are likely to be limited, however after impressing on loan at Reading, Nottingham Forest and Norwich in the Championship Ryan Bertrand has stepped up to make his Premier League debut against Birmingham.

He marked this 35 minute debut with a sublime assist from the byline to set up Florent Malouda for Chelsea’s second and announce his arrival to those who may not have been tracking a player who has been at Stamford Bridge for more than five years after joining from Gillingham as a teenager.

The future looks bright for the twenty one year old and long may it continue.

Fitness Coach Plays For Chelsea Reserves Due to Lack of Numbers

With the first team and youth teams involved in important fixtures, Chelsea reserves were short on numbers going into last night’s reserve game away against Manchester United, which meant that two members of the club’s coaching staff featured on the bench.

This lack of numbers saw four players make their reserve team debuts in a side that featured mainly first year scholars or those too old to feature in the youth cup but not currently in contention for a first team place.

The game was one that will not be forgotten for the reserve team debutants Walter Figueira, Alex Davey, Ali Gordon and Amin Affane or for Carl Magnay who made his first start in 13 months on his recovery from a horrific injury.

The substitutes bench was perhaps the biggest surprise with 43 year old goalkeeping coach Mark Beeny and first team fitness coach Chris Jones press ganged into warming the bench.

For Chris Jones tonight saw more than half an hours action in the second half coming on for Kaby in what was his second appearance for the reserves despite his coaching role.

It was therefore no surprise that Manchester United proved too strong for an inexperienced Chelsea side who slumped to a four goals to one defeat.

Chelsea (4-4-1-1) Jan Sebek; Ali Gordon, Carlo Magnay (c) (Alex Davey 58), Archange Nkumu, Amin Affane; Gokhan Tore, Conor Clifford, Michael Woods (Walter Figueira 75), Adam Phillip; Kaby (Chris Jones 58); Marko Mitrovic.

Yossi Benayoun Returns For Chelsea

In a piece of great news, Yossi Benayoun returned to the Chelsea first team after months on the sidelines through injury as a half time substitute.

This marks a fresh start for the Israeli who has been frustratingly been unable to feature in large parts of the season due to a torn tendon.

He came on with Chelsea chasing a goal against a resilient Wigan side and played his part in a hard thought one goal victory over the Lactics.

Lets hope he can play a real part in a push in the last couple of months of the season.
